Summary
Before the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, many people lived in large families and their lives were fairly ordinary. Many families worked as cultivators and farmers, consuming milk, potatoes, cassava, and beans. However, there was a lack of education due to the prevalence of genocide ideology.
The Genocide was planned and executed with such brutality that it claimed the lives of over a million people in Rwanda within just 100 days. The majority of the survivors were orphaned, and many of them unexpectedly found themselves as young children responsible for their families.
Challenge
Despite considerable economic progress in Rwanda many children lack decent Education. Children in rural areas and from poor families have no access to proper education with schools lacking basic facilities, teachers being unmotivated and frequently absent. Even those who eventually make it through nine years of schooling graduate lacking even basic skills, making it impossible to seek gainful employment or pursue higher education.
Solution
Education is the only ladder for these rural and poor children to climb out of poverty cycle.
To break this cycle of challenges, Peace and Hope Initiative through Peace and Hope seeks to bridge this gap by expanding the school infrastructure to accommodate more children who are unable to have access to education due to poverty and limited means from their families. This is also a way to protect them from child labour and sexual abuse.
With your support, the Peace and Hope Initiative can expand the school to ensure that every child who attends has access to the education they deserve, without overcrowding. The current situation does not allow for any one-on-one time with teachers for struggling children, which leads to some children falling behind. As not every child learns at the same pace, the school must be expanded, and you can help!
Long-Term Impact
Children passing out of the school would have received a good quality education with English and computer literacy and holistic development, which would enable them to realize their full potential in any field they choose. This education is the key to lifting them and their families out of the vicious cycle of poverty. Teacher augmentation, English & remedial teaching in Govt. schools lead to improved quality of education producing more confident & educated children.
